These days just about everything young people eat isn’t good
for them. Candy is the number one culprit, then sodas, cookies, and
chips. Cutting out snacks is hard, but it can be done. What about
breakfast, lunch and dinner? They’re not much better than snacks!
All the sugar and fats we consume a day would probably kill a cow
in a month. The health of America’s youth is really bad, you’ve
probably heard. It’s not that you young folks are eating too much.
You’re actually not eating enough – enough of the right foods.
Here’s the thing. Let’s get down to business. The more fruit,
vegetables, and natural whole grains we can get into our system
the better. For starters, girls between 8 and 12 should consume
about 1,800 calories a day (boys 2,200).
Here are foods rich in calcium, vitamins, and minerals: Fish,
chicken, beef, beans, milk, cheese, yogurt, nuts, spinach, broccoli,
bananas, oranges, berries, breads, and don’t forget water. Most of
these foods help improve brain function. You need at least three
servings a day of fruit, vegetables, and dairy; two servings of fish,
meat, nuts, and grains; and about EIGHT servings of water (8
glasses).
If you start practicing good eating habits while you’re young,
you won’t have nearly as many health problems when you’re older.
What’s more important is that you’ll live a lot longer. So, eat and be
merry while you’re young in order to be happy, healthy and fit when
you’re old.
