"Old Savannah" by Rhoda Walker
It was filled with the distinct stench of factory air covered with yams, hams, greens, beans, fried chicken and other succulent things. Sundays stirred our souls as sisters shouted with the Holy Ghost like ancient Africans of the west coast. The preaching was loud and strong, the church hours long. We joyfully stomped and clapped to soulful gospel songs. There were miles of red clay beneath our fast feet on most streets. Corner store penny cookies, nickel pickles and Ms. Lula Mae’s homemade frozen trills were our after school treats. No one ever stayed inside. After chores we had jump rope, hop scotch, scooters, skates, and bikes to ride. There was little we enjoyed more than the bounty from the beach shore. In the marsh we trapped crabs, as many as our nets could grab.
From the salty wet ground and muddy mounds we found oysters by the pound. We nearly exploded eating melons down to the rhines, peaches, plums and scuppenongs, folks called scorpinines in the good ole Savannah summer time. There were slow Captain Sam Riverboat rides down Daufuski way where people relaxed and partied all day. Nothing could match these festive times when cheerful adults did dine on deviled crabs in the shell and sweet Island fruit wine. Those early urban simple sounds and scents are what I miss most of all. Roosters crowing, chopped wood and dead leaves burning in the crisp, cool fall. I’ve truly lost my heart and mind in a most exquisite, unspoiled time I shall woefully never again find. Old Savannah...
