HISTORY
&
Tourism in America got its start with the rich.
They were the only set that could afford to actually
take off and live a life of leisure one to two weeks
out of the year. Tourism began to boom in the U.
S. right after the interstate highways and
expressways were built. This was also after WWII
when many lower class Americans began to fit
comfortably into the middle class. They started
loading up the family cars to beaches and theme
parks. During these times traveling was difficult
and potentially dangerous for African Americans in
the Jim Crow, South. Victor Green, an African
American, travel agent from New York, established
the Negro Traveler’s Green Book in 1936, which
offered secure locations for blacks like hotels,
restaurants, service stations, beauty and barber
shops, etc.
